Step 1 of 10

The start

You type a question. Before following its trip, take a guess: how will the AI find the answer?

What happens

  1. You type a question and hit Send. Almost at once, an answer starts to appear.

  2. In between, your question left your phone. It went by radio to an antenna, then through cables to a building full of machines.

  3. There, a language model read it and put together the answer, then sent it back the same way.

  4. How does it do that? You'll hear several explanations, and they can't all be right. You'll pick yours in a moment.

  5. Then you'll follow your question step by step. At each stop you guess first, then look at what a real model computes, with numbers whose sources you can check.

Your turn

Start from a question, your own or one of those offered, then make your guess.

Your question

How do you think the AI comes up with its answer?

These four answers come from a survey of American adults. At the end of the journey, you will see what people answered.

Without JavaScript, nothing is kept from one page to the next: remember your question and your choice for the end of the journey.

Takeaway

Between your screen and the answer, your question crosses a network, a data center and a model, then comes back. Your first guess gets checked when you arrive.

Reading a number on this site

A number with a dotted underline opens a bubble: what it measures, what it counts and what it leaves out, its source and its date. The bubble also says where the number was read: from the organization that produced it, in a press report, or in an estimate that its own source calls uncertain. When sources disagree, the site gives a range.

The model's calculations

The examples along the way are real calculations, run for this site by an open model. The next step, "Tokens", says which one and how far its answers can be trusted.
